Because I am a Girl

What we do

Donate to Girls

Change the lives of underprivileged girls around the world! By sponsoring a girl or donating to Girls Fund, you can help make the world a better place for girls living in developing countries.

Sponsor a girl (HK$8 daily)

When you sponsor a girl with Plan, your donation will address the needs of your sponsored girl and help her overcome obstacles. Through supporting her living and the development programmes in her community, you can help her grow up with equal opportunities and her community will be benefited.

Girls Fund (HK$4 daily)

With your monthly HK$120 donation to Plan’s Girls Fund, community programmes can be launched to identify and respond to the barriers girls face. It is only through giving girls equal rights that they can fully develop their potential and bring positive changes to society with their unique femininity. You may also choose to make one-off donation.

Use of Donation

The donations are used in four major areas: offering education to girls, providing vocational training, advocating girls’ rights to eliminate early marriage and sexual violence, as well as monitoring the situation of girls to achieve Sustainable Development Goals. It is our mission to create an equal world for girls so they can go to school, realize their potential and live life to the fullest.

Around the globe, 62 million girls are not in school. In low-income countries, girls are less likely to receive education than boys. Knowledge can change fate. Plan’s Girls Fund provides girls with financial assistance and scholarships to help and encourage girls to go to school, consequently bringing long-term changes to their lives.

Vocational training

Children of stateless ethnic minorities, such as those living in Northern Thailand, are usually denied access to formal education. Most can only resort to low-income occupations when they grow up. In New Delhi, India, many young girls who have completed basic education still receive few job opportunities due to a lack of relevant job knowledge and skills. By providing girls in Northern Thailand and India with vocational training in the areas such as financial management, computer application and marketing promotion, girls are more likely to be employed and become self-sufficient.

Advocacy for Girls’ Rights

The Fund enables Plan to educate the public on issues related to child protection and gender equality. Every 2 seconds a girl gets married; 1 in 3 women worldwide have experienced physical or sexual violence in their lives. Plan has worked with global change agents to advocate girls’ rights and successfully raised the minimum age of marriage to 18 through advocating for law change in the National Congress of Guatemala. In Malawi, Africa, the current Constitution allows boys and girls between age15 and 18 to get married under the consent of their parents; there is also no codified constitution that prohibits children under age 15 from getting married. Therefore, Plan is currently supporting the anti-child marriage work in Malawi, which involves advocacy work to strengthen the protection of girls’ rights in the Constitution. Besides, in a project in New Delhi, India, we educate local girls on ways to protect themselves from violence.

Monitor the situation of girls to achieve Sustainable Development Goals

United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals stress the importance of gender equality and girls’ rights. Goal 5.3 even specifically highlighted the commitment to end harmful practices such as child marriage, forced marriage and female genital mutilations. However, studies conducted by Plan International pointed out that the lack of data about girls in many countries has obstructed our understanding about the difficulties faced by girls and hindered the governments’ efforts in setting effective policies to tackle the problems. Your support to Girls Fund can assist us in carrying out more comprehensive data mining and analysis, which can help fill the existing data gap and promote gender equality more effectively, leaving no girls behind!

Your donation will go directly to the programmes that help disadvantaged girls and their families escape from poverty. Donate to Girls Fund now to secure girls’ rights and change their lives!

Allocation of donations

Plan International will allocate donations for designated projects in accordance with the donor’s intent. However, when the designated project is fully funded, additional donations will be used where needed most for more efficient use of resources without prior notice.
